This afternoon, the United Nations General Assembly, in an Emergency Special Session, approved the Resolution on the admission of new members to the United Nations, which recommends that the Security Council reconsider favourably the request of the State of Palestine to become a full member of the United Nations.
The Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Damiano Beleffi, expressed the favourable vote of the Republic of San Marino, as did the majority of the Member States, which considered the State of Palestine qualified for membership.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in recalling the position expressed by the Republic, confirms that it also conforms with the Decision approved by the Great and General Council on 15 March, which reaffirms the Republic’s commitment within multilateral fora for a lasting and sustainable peace, based on a two-state solution, which fully guarantees the rights of the State of Israel and the aspirations and legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.
San Marino, even a few days ago, at the same Organization, reiterated the need of a collective commitment to the achievement of a lasting and sustainable peace, based on the two-state solution, so that Israel and Palestine can live side by side in peace, security and mutual recognition, particularly convinced that Palestine’s accession to the United Nations, as a full member, would facilitate the achievement of such a solution.
On the same occasion, San Marino strongly reiterated its condemnation of the horrific terrorist attacks by Hamas, recalling the Republic's position so that the international community interrupts the terrible cycle of violence and returns to its commitment for a lasting peace through a renewed peace process, also reiterating its support for the organisation of an international peace Conference, under the aegis of the United Nations.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also expresses strong concern for the intensification of air strikes on Rafah, preventing a possible ground operation for any catastrophic humanitarian consequences on a million Palestinians currently in Rafah to find shelter from fighting.
